PTK ACTIVITIES

Throughout the school year, the Phi Theta Kappa does various activites with its memebers, to help the student body by providing fund raisers, donating time for special purpose needs, and by joining together as a fellowship to be part of an honor society.

2007 Activities

During the summer of 2007, CVCC's Student Activites Committee recommended to Dr. Hinshaw that CVCC student organizations and clubs be primarily funded by the school and that fundraising activites be greatly reduced. The recommendation was approved and now all CVCC student organizations and clubs are primarily funded by the college. Organizations/clubs may still conduct fundraisers, but fundraisers will be much fewer in number and the process to get fundraisers approved has been changed as well. This is great news for all CVCC student organizations/clubs!

In September 2007, Joshua Carter, and Carolina Coram attended the annual Leadership Conference, which was held in Charleston, SC. The three day conference is held to familiarize officers and members with the preperation of Hallmark Awards packets.

In October, Kristy Wooten, Joshua Carter, and Caroline Coram attended the Fall Fellowship Conference in Bostic, NC, at Camp McCall. Beta Eta Delta co-hosts this conference and served a meal on Friday evening. This is the only conference that members may bring family to and this year, the conference attracted approximately 90 attendees.

On November 1st, Phi Theta Kappa sponsored the Campus Cleanup Event. Approximately 70 faculty, staff, and students participated in cleaning up the campus, including weeding flower beds, cleaning tables and display cases, and collecting trash along the creek on CVCC's property near the Startown entrance and around the entire campus. Many Phi Theta Kappa members participated as well. Some instructors offered extra credit to their students if they attended, including Emily Whitely, Kristy Wooten, and Joanna Connolly.

During the first half of the month of December, Phi Theta Kappa will be conducting a winter coat drive for children and adults in need. The coats we collect will be donated to the Salvation Army to distribute to families in need of winter coats. If you are interested in donating gently used or new coats, please bring them to Kristy Wooten, lead advisor, in WW 111-H; Amy Bechtol in the LRC; Bo Glenn in Student Services, or Kay Gregory in the VSL hallway in the mian building. Boasts will be accepted through December 21st.
